Located 180 km south southwest of Tokyo, Miyake Island is the third largest island in the Ise chain at 55 square kilometers. Along with onohara Island, uninhabited, the village office is temporarily seated in a government office building in the Ako district. Miyake Island is a volcanic island, surrounded by the Kuroshio Current, with the Mt. Oyama volcano located in the middle of the island. The climate is a warm maritime climate with frequent rain. The primary island industries are fishing, farming and tourism. The island was completely closed for five years after an eruption in 2000, but in 2005 the islanders returned and have combined their efforts to rebuild the island.
